Week Five: the week of "Thons"

This has been one of those weeks that makes me wish I were still in elementary school: read-a-thon (my favorite day of the whole year when I was young) and walk-a-thon all in one week!

Monday's read-a-thon consisted of TWO assemblies--one start-of-the-year kick-off assembly and a storyteller to made us all laugh with her stories about the oven monster who ate her cookies as a kid. We also read two versions of the Three Little Pigs and wrote our own version--publishing this piece is still in the works, but it will be up on the blog sometime next week.

In music we're learning more and more about the science of rhythm and music.

We keep working hard on our goals--the other teachers and I ordered new workbooks for math and reading to help us with this. These should come on Monday or Tuesday--we're really excited!

Friday was the walk-a-thon--our class can really move! One student ran almost the entire time. In fact, we were doing so well that Mr. Rencher invited our class (and our class only) to come in and pick a prize from his special prize box. What an honor! The kids were all so flattered. :) Keep reading to see pictures from today's fun.

**HOMEWORK NOTES**
It seems that there have been lot's of questions regarding daily homework assignments. Below you will find the schedule and then I will clarify a few things.

Monday - spelling: write words 3 times and word sort. I will send home the list for spelling words on Monday. You can either keep this list for the entire week or check the blog under the tab "Word Sorts" to access this list throughout the week to complete the rest of the spelling homework.
Tuesday - math, spelling: abc order. Use the same spelling words as on Monday to complete this task.
Wednesday - reading, spelling: sort by syllables. Use the same spelling words as on Monday to complete this task.
Thursday - writing, spelling: draw a picture/write a sentence. Your student will have either sentences or pictures, not both. Use the same spelling words as on Monday to complete this task.
Friday - check the blog (this is most important) and class dojo. Sign the blue slip to return on Monday.

**Some students are working on rhymes before moving on to actual spelling words to help develop an awareness of sounds and word parts first. These pictures are also posted under "Word Sorts" if you lose them, however we will send home a page for your child to cut and paste each day. Because pictures don't lend themselves to writing and alphabetic order, the homework for these sorts is slightly different:
Monday - match rhymes cut & paste
Tuesday -  math, match rhymes cut & paste (repetition is a beautiful thing!)
Wednesday - reading, first sounds cut & paste
Thursday - writing, syllable sort cut & paste (even though the worksheet has lines for writing, they can cut and paste instead--this saves us a little money on copies)
Friday - check blog

Some students will have new words next week because they performed beautifully on today's spelling test. Others will practice it for another week until they get at least 80% correct.

This week our students of the week are those who turned in homework every day this week:

BRODY

HANNAH

Wow! Great job Brody and Hannah!

And here are a few glimpses of the walk-a-thon:

Happy weekend!
