Week 21

This is what our week looked like:

Be cool. This week we finished up our unit in Superhero Social Skills on anxiety reduction, more commonly called "staying cool". This is such an important concept and many struggle with controlling their emotions, so keeping watching the videos at home if you think your child will benefit from it! Here are some of our role plays from this week:

Next week's unit: Participation.

Selling. On Wednesday we made the things that we had planned to create and sell last week. There were so many creative ideas: a board game, a kite, a card game, a flag, pictures, decorative boxes--we pretty much had it all! Today students sold the things that they made for tokens (rather than doing the class store). Each student came up with a price for the item and wrote it on a price tag. Then students one at a time chose which thing they wanted to buy. Unfortunately some students learned the hard way that if someone else buys the item, it can't be bought again. It was a great exercise in staying cool for this reason and because, for some, it was harder than they expected to sell the things they made. Overall I was very impressed at how well they worked in this activity.

Students have also been wrapping up a final project that they will present next week (I hope it will be ready to present on Monday...I never can quite predict how things will turn out). In this project, each student had to describe something that they would like to buy, determine how much it would cost and come up with a way to earn money to purchase the item. They also had to determine what they would use to pay for it (we learned about checks and credit cards and how they can also be used as money), if the thing they wanted was a good or a service, a want or a need, etc, etc, etc. I am eager to see everyone present their work.

Once this unit is wrapped up we will begin our science unit on dinosaurs and fossils.

Get real. We wrapped up our unit on informational texts and biographies today. This week we read books about Martin Luther King Jr. in honor of his day as well as Black History month next week. We looked for text features in informational texts, practiced parts of speech and searched for context clues to help us understand unfamiliar words.

Heart art. In art today we made woven hearts out of paper. These hearts will go up in the cafeteria for the month of February. Be sure to look for your child's heart when you stop by for S.E.P.s.

REMINDER: IF YOU HAVE NOT YET SIGNED UP FOR S.E.P.s THE WINDOW AND WOULD LIKE TO, DO SO NOW. ONCE THE WINDOW CLOSES, YOU WILL HAVE TO CALL ME AND MAKE AN APPOINTMENT.
