Sorry for the late post--I know a lot of people like to get homework done first thing after school on Friday so I try to post asap. However, the--ahem--"appointment" I had to run to was the BYU vs. BSU football game. Go cougars. :)
This past week was Red Ribbon Week or SPIRIT week. Along with that came a few fun activities, including dressing up and an assembly to encourage students to stay bully-free and drug-free on Friday. After the assembly was over, our AMAZING aides spoke to our guests and asked if our class could get a closer look at the German Shepherd they brought to the assembly. They ended up bringing him right out to recess with us so everyone could see and pet him! Unfortunately I was unable to come to recess, so I have no pictures to post of this...
We have also moved our science study of habitats to actual animals themselves. We will learn a bit about animal classifications and life cycles, which ties closely with the state core for fourth grade science.
We have had a slight schedule change since Mrs. Bliss left us--our Wednesday afternoon Life Skills class has become our music time and our former music time (Tuesday/Thursday right after lunch) has become another opportunity for social skills practice. I'm really excited about this--I think the students will benefit from a little more direct instruction in certain social skills. This past week we talked about problem solving. Specifically, we defined the small, medium and large problem and talked about the appropriate response to these problems. You can see the visual we used here (credit to Jennifer Fletcher, small group teacher at Thunder Ridge). We will continue to talk about this and practice it for a little while until students begin to get a better grasp of responding appropriately to the size of their problems.
In A.P.E. we just finished up a throwing unit, using little fabric ghosts. All of us teachers have been so impressed with the participation in P.E. this past month--very little complaining and lots and lots of moving! Many students have found it very motivating to race the teachers during P.E... this has becoming a part of my regular exercise now. They are fast.
Coming Up:
